“Trees on Wires/Trees Under Tension”
One of the greatest risks that arborists can face is dealing with the hazards associated with trees that have fallen on wires. We will discuss this hazard, and some of the science-based mitigation techniques, training, best practices, and new concepts.

“Tree Disease Update – Common and Emerging Diseases in Kentucky’s Urban Forests”
Tree diseases are a part of the urban forest, and symptoms run the gamut from sudden and eye-catching to slow and stealthy. Learn how to recognize not only the common infectious diseases that plague our landscapes, but how to identify potential predisposing stresses that give pathogens the upper hand. In this presentation, we will look back at 2023 with an eye to early diagnosis and management of diseases in the upcoming year. Emerging tree disease threats will also be highlighted.

Participants will hear stories from the field that highlight Forest Therapy/Forest Immersion initiatives to engage diverse audiences, health care providers, the urban and community forestry sectors, federal employees and will learn methods to pursue Forest Therapy Guide training and Forest Therapy Trail Certification.

There is an old adage about doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. It is time to look at Safety Differently! We will look at some of the key concepts around Safety 2: Resilience, capacity, context, and learning.

“Honeybee's- How they choose what trees to live in and how to work or remove a hive in a tree.”
In early spring colonies (honeybees) start to build their population up in great numbers and become crowded thus causing them to swarm these bees that swarmed needs a place to start a new colony. Scouts go looking for a cavity that can sustain them, it can be in a building, house eve, barn loft or hollow tree. Cavity size will vary but usually approximately 30 liters.
There are several ways to approach handling honeybees in trees cavities. Possibly trapping which takes time and planning or screening opening, finding their location within the hollow area before starting to take down the tree.

This talk will provide background information on the diagnosis, identification, and treatment of insect pests that feed on trees in the urban landscape. We will discuss the unique life histories of various insect pests and how we can use that information to inform our management practices.

“Vascular Streak Dieback of Redbud: What Plant Pathologists Know So Far”
In recent years, nurseries in multiple states have reported moderate to severe dieback, chlorosis and stunting of redbud. Dieback is a catch-all phrase that describes a constellation of symptoms that include discolored, blighted leaves, followed by wilting, flagging and branch death. Join us as Dr. Janna Beckerman describes the problem and what has been done to diagnose the problem.

"Survey Results of Root Rots in Landscape and Nursery Plants"
The health and biology of fine roots are largely misunderstood in the green industry. Root rot diseases of fine roots are serious problems in nursery, landscape, and collection plants. Their pathogens (disease-causing microbes) can be easily moved on plant material, soil, and tools. A better understanding of these diseases, their symptoms, and management practices will allow for them to be diagnosed and managed sooner, resulting in fewer losses in nursery crops, botanical collections, and landscapes. This presentation will discuss recent survey results and provide insight on common pathogens and how to manage them.

“Spotted Lantern Fly (SLF) and Box Tree Moth (BTM): Two New Invasives That You Need to Know”
SLF has been confirmed in northern Kentucky and BTM is knocking on the door. This presentation will provide updates on SLF and BTM including their biology, potential impacts, management options, and tips on detection.

“Invasion of the Insects”
Join Jonathan Larson of the UK Entomology department for an update on the movement of invasive species in the state of Kentucky. Jonathan will focus on the regulatory side of invasive species and the ways that Kentuckians can report sightings and give some updates on our citizen science efforts on that front.
